Honoring Juneteenth and African American history

Juneteenth is an important holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States.

It honors June 19, 1865, the day when enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. In Alamance County, Juneteenth has become a meaningful celebration of freedom, culture, and community unity.

Cities and towns in Alamance County, including Burlington and Green Level, host annual Juneteenth events that bring people together through music, food, art, and education. Community organizations and local leaders work together to honor African American history and recognize the struggles and achievements of Black Americans. Events often include readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, live performances, vendors, and activities for families.

Juneteenth in Alamance County is more than a celebration of the past. It is also a reminder of the importance of equality, justice, and understanding among all people. By learning about history and celebrating diversity, the community continues to move toward a brighter future. Juneteenth encourages citizens to remember the sacrifices of earlier generations while inspiring hope and unity for the future.
