New Collaboration in Cardiology and GI

By: Kelli Emery and Aslee Watson

An exciting new initiative between Cardiology and GI is underway, making a meaningful difference during periods of short staffing by cross-training across departments. Through this effort, Rhonda Mazejka, RN, has helped coordinate staff support by sending team members to Cardiology when needed and by utilizing our department when GI requires assistance. This collaboration reflects teamwork at its best, with staff stepping outside their usual roles to support one another.

Cross-training has not only helped maintain smooth operations during staffing shortages, but it has also strengthened relationships among coworkers who may not have previously worked together. Team members consistently step in, work efficiently, and ensure that cross-trained staff feel welcomed and valued as part of the team, because they are.

Since implementing this approach, the impact has been significant, especially during periods of increased staffing challenges. Cardiology has greatly appreciated the additional support, and the initiative has improved continuity of care by reducing patient wait times and keeping patient flow moving efficiently when extra help is available.

This collaborative effort has been overwhelmingly positive, and we hope to continue it. It also serves as a strong model for other departments—creating opportunities to support one another, build new skills, and strengthen connections across the organization.
