WHAT IS PODIATRY?

Podiatry is the medical specialty that is concerned with treatment of conditions affecting the feet, ankles, and lower extremities which can also include the legs. Training to become a podiatric doctor includes study of anatomy, pharmacology, general medicine & surgery, physiology, and other medical fields. Podiatry can extend into other fields of medicine such as sports medicine, geriatrics, pediatrics, and biomechanics.

Kernodle Clinic Podiatric specialists are interested in providing quality service to meet our patients individual needs. Services are provided at both our Burlington and Mebane locations and surgeries are performed at both ARMC and Mebane Surgical Center for our patient’s convenience. ABOUT OUR PODIATRISTS

Dr. Todd Cline obtained his medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences and the College of Podiatric Medicine in Surgery. He then did his residency at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He is also a member of three related organizations, namely: American Podiatric Medical Association, NC Podiatric Medical Society, and American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Dr. Justin Fowler received his medical degree from the Ohio Medical College of Podiatric Medicine, and did his residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is a member of distinctive professional organizations North Carolina Foot and Ankle Society and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is also Board Certified in Foot Surgery and Board Certified in Reconstructive Rear-foot and Ankle Surgery.

Dr. Andrew Baker obtained his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery in Chicago, IL.  He completed a reconstructive foot and ankle surgery residency at Community Health Network in Indianapolis, IN and then completed a reconstructive foot and ankle surgery fellowship at Kentucky/Indiana Foot and Ankle Specialists in Louisville, KY.  Dr. Baker is a Diplomate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) board certified in foot and ankle reconstruction surgery.  He is a member of the North Carolina Foot and Ankle Society (NCFAS), American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

Physiatry, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), aims to restore and improve a patient’s physical ability and quality of life. The fellowship-trained physician in the Physiatry Department at Kernodle Clinic treats spine-related and musculoskeletal conditions with a combination of medication, therapy, and injections to maximize a patient’s function in hopes to avoid surgical intervention.

Physiatry covers a multitude of conditions and areas of the human body. Physiatry deals with restoring optimal function to muscles, bones, tissue and the nervous system. It can be beneficial for people recovering from a stroke, amputees or patients suffering from fibromyalgia.

TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR PHYSIATRY TREATMENT

Many people might get a diagnosis from a doctor and that doctor might recommend surgery. Before immediately deciding to go the surgery route, it is always good practice to see a physiatrist and get a second opinion. There are many times surgery can be avoided when dealing with conditions that may limit activity and/or cause pain. A physiatrist might be able to show you that physical therapy or other non-surgical techniques are all you need to treat your condition and return to normal pain free activity.

Physiatry treatment is commonly tailored to the individual. Exercises and treatment options are administered depending on the condition, pain, mobility, age, etc. After in office treatment, patients can help themselves recover by following physiatrist instructions for medication, exercise, therapy and rest.

WHAT IS PHYSICAL THERAPY LIKE AT KERNODLE?

The goal of physical therapy and sports rehab is to restore normal function to specific portions of the body. This definition of normal function might be different from person to person. An elite athlete’s normal function of a particular part of the body is going to be drastically different than that of an elderly patient. The idea is to address each case individually and formulate a physical therapy or sports rehabilitation plan that addresses the weaknesses and improves the function of the body.

Once the therapy or rehabilitation plan is established, our physicians and staff at Kernodle guide patients on performing correct technique and developing a good routine. The importance of technique and the correct execution of exercises is integral to the time and effectiveness of therapy. After correct technique is mastered, we will help patients develop a good routine to apply to their individual plans.

The Kernodle Neurology Department offers comprehensive neurology services including but not limited to Electroencephalography (EEG), Nerve Conduction Studies & Electromyography (NCS & EMG), nerve blocks, Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) management, etc.  Our entire practice takes great pride in delivering a vast array of neurological and other medical services with a commitment to excellence. Dr. Shah completed his medical education at the M.P. Shah Medical College, and attended his residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He is a member of numerous organizations, including the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Potter completed his medical education at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, and went on to attend his residency and fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Potter is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Medical Association.

The purpose of the Gastroenterology Department of the Kernodle Clinic is to improve the health of our patients. We are dedicated to the early detection of prompt treatment of the diseases of the digestive system. These include colon cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease, ulcers, hepatitis A other liver diseases, pancreatis, celiac disease and esophageal disorders. All of our doctors are board certified in Gastoenterology.
