A Guide to Exercise During Pregnancy

First and foremost, if you are expecting, congratulations! Whether this is your first pregnancy or you are a pro, the next 9 months are an exciting time. However, just because you are pregnant does not mean you should let your health slip. If you were exercising regularly prior to pregnancy, in most cases you should be able to continue to exercise at the same fitness level throughout your pregnancy. If you were not exercising prior to pregnancy, that is okay too. Just remember to start slow and listen to your body.

The Benefit of Exercise During Pregnancy

It is no secret that exercise is important for all stages of life. However, when pregnant, it is essential in ensuring a healthy pregnancy. In fact, exercise during pregnancy may help to build the stamina needed for delivery and decrease your chances of the following pregnancy related conditions:

  • High blood pressure
  • Excessive weight gain
  • Pregnancy aches and pains (round ligament pain, sciatic nerve pain, etc.)
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Cesarean section

The Best Exercises to Perform While Pregnant

It is never too late to begin an exercise routine. Even if you are unable to hit the gym, just staying active is key. Below are a few exercises that are pregnancy friendly both inside and outside of the gym:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Elliptical machine
  • Aerobics

Exercises where there is a higher risk for falling, such as skiing, or physical sports, such as football, should be avoided while pregnant. When it comes to exercise while pregnant, trust your gut. If you are concerned an exercise may be unsafe, sit it out and consult with your doctor.

When Should Exercise Not Be Performed?

As always, it is important to speak to your doctor before beginning a new workout regime, especially while pregnant. Additionally, if any of the following pertain to you, we recommend you avoid exercise unless approved by your doctor:

  • Low placenta
  • Threatened or recurrent miscarriages
  • Weak cervix
  • History of premature labor
  • Bleeding or spotting
  • Asthma
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
